Daily News Sports: Our experience covering the MAC Tournament in Cleveland

March 7-11, seven members of Daily News Sports traveled to Cleveland to cover Ball State Men's and Women's Basketball in the MAC Tournament. After their trip, the seven wanted to take time to reflect on their opportunity to not only cover these games and more, but also their experience traveling together.

Knoxville, Tennessee: From our perspective

Sept. 1, Ball State Daily News News Editor Kyle Smedley, Sports Editor Daniel Kehn, Visual and Photo Editor Amber Pietz and Associate Photo Editor Jacy Bradley traveled to Knoxville, Tennessee to cover Ball State Football's contest against the University of Tennessee, in which the Cardinals fell 59-10. 

On their final day in Los Angeles, student journalists Amber Pietz and Daniel Kehn explored the UCLA campus and the surrounding area in search of postcard worthy photographs. Their goal was to accurately convert their experience while on the West Coast.

A journal from a photojournalist: My first year

The more I shot sports, the more I seemed to find myself. When I came to college I felt lost. Not because I didn’t know what I wanted to do with my life, but because I didn’t really know who I was anymore. I lost myself in high school and being at the Daily News helped me find my place and my people.

The Santa Monica Pier opened Sept. 9, 1909, it was the first concrete pier on the West Coast of the United States when built, according to santamonicapier.org “The pier became an instant favorite among the fishing community,” the pier’s website reads. “Men and women, whether young, old, rich or poor, enjoyed the ample supply of fish and simple pleasure of dropping a line and waiting for a bit…” The pier collapsed in 1919 as the concreted piles had begun to rust through. After an almost two-year process of replacing the rusted through concreted with creosote-treated wooden piles, the pier was open again. Today, the pier is operated by Pacific Park and hosts over 9 million guests per year.
