The reviewer feels it is imperative to first mention the curious style of narrative employed in Orlando by Virginia Woolf. She references not only the reader, but also herself, directly a number of times. The novel, with its unusual telling, is a biography of a person of the same name. Despite being a biography though, it is a work of fiction, based on Woolf’s lover, Vita Sackville-West. However, the occurrences in the book are more often than not impossible.

Hillary Clinton began last Saturday by giving an address at the Human Rights Campaign breakfast. She spoke about how far the LGBT community has come in the past few years in regard to legislation. According to Clinton, everyone within the community wishes they could “kick back,” but with the current state, “there are still public officials doing everything in their power to interfere with [LGBT] rights.” She describes the struggle against this as the constant defense of progress they’ve made. Clinton mentions several Republicans, rebuking them for their actions against the LGBT community. She uses a poignant story of a young man featured in the blog Humans of New York who was distraught and scared of his future because of his homosexuality, to show that the fight is not yet over. As she says, it isn’t over “until every single person is treated with equal rights and dignity.” She says she’s running for president to end the injustices faced by LGBT Americans once and for all.

Just a day before the Pope was scheduled to start a month long synod on family, marriage, divorce, and same-sex relationships, Vatican priest Krzysztof Charama announced that he was gay and introduced his partner, Eduard, to reporters. He was fired later that day from his position in the Vatican’s doctrine office. In his statement to the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera, Charama said “I want the Church and my community to know who I am: a gay priest who is happy, and proud of his identity. I’m prepared to pay the consequences, but it’s time the Church opened its eyes, and realized that offering gay believers total abstinence from a life of love is inhuman.” In response to the timing of Charama’s very public coming out, Rev. Federico Lombardi said, “Very serious and irresponsible, since it aims to subject the Synod assembly to undue media pressure.” Though people were already waiting to see what the Pope had to say on same-sex relationships and marriage, this announcement came as a surprise.

After public outcry over social media and media outlets, big pharma’s most exposed CEO agreed to lower the price of a life-saving drug. Mark Shkreli, the CEO of Turing Pharmaceuticals, was called America’s “most hated man” after his company raised the price of the AIDS treatment drug Daraprim. According to the New York Times, Turing Pharmaceuticals acquired Daraprim in late August. Then on September 20th, Turing raised the price of Daraprim from $13.50 a tablet to $750 overnight. Shkreli, had said the money from the increase would be used to develop better treatment. He told NBC News that drugs like Daraprim will not exist if small companies cannot get a return on their investment and that “it’s very hard stuff to understand.” He stated in his interview that, "it's very easy to see a large drug price increase and say 'Gosh, those people must be gouging.' But when you find out that the company is not really making any money, what does that mean?"

“If someone is gay and searches for the Lord and has good will, who am I to judge?” These words spoken two years ago by Pope Francis set off a firestorm in the Catholic community. While many conservative Catholics were appalled, LGBTQIA Catholics and their allies in the community were hopeful. Could this new Pope potentially change the church’s stance on the acceptance of members of the LGBTQIA community?

Somehow I cannot hide /Who I am, though I've tried./ When will my reflection show who I am inside? Over the past seventeen years we younger Millennials have grown up with these lyrics from the Academy Award-nominated anthem “Reflection” from the 1998 Disney film Mulan. Loosely based on the Chinese legend of the same name, the movie tells the story of a young woman who defies the gender norms of her strict society when she disguises herself as a male soldier in order to save her father’s life. Like most other Disney protagonists (including Aladdin the impoverished “street rat,” Belle the bookworm, and Ariel the wannabe human) Mulan’s character is an underdog who wishes for something more from life than what her society expects from her.
