Double Indemnity is a 1944 noir film involving an insurance salesman, Walter Neff (Fred MacMurray), helping a housewife (Barbara Stanwyck) murder her husband and claim the compensation. Neff records his exploits for his friend and coworker, Barton Keyes (Edward G. Robinson), to listen to before he dies. So where does the queer characteristic come into play? At face value, we as the audience see that Neff falls for Phyllis, the housewife, and becomes involved in a heterosexual affair. However, the film was produced in 1944, so the filmmakers had to work with the censors; for example, the film implies that Neff and Phyllis have sex by cutting from them kissing to them on a couch smoking and looking distant. If a heterosexual couple can't say or show that they had sex, then how could a queer couple be shown outright in the 40s?

I don’t generally like hanging out with straight people, specifically young straight men. When I say “straight,” what I really mean is the young men who take a certain pride in being straight. You know, the 18-year-old who walks around in a backwards baseball hat. The one who complains loudly about how hard it is to not cheat on his long distance girlfriend, and then proceeds to dump her to have sex with the girl across the hall. When I say “straight men,” what I mean is the 20-year-old man who will slap the ass of a seventeen year old male coworker while making derogatory comments about women and homosexual men to prove how straight he is. When I say, “straight men,” I am referring to the young men who are constantly worried about being straight enough.

Ireland sealed the deal on marriage equality with the Marriage Act 2015 this past October. A referendum in May revised the Irish constitution to extend civil marriage rights to same-sex couples. Do I Sound Gay? is a documentary released in September 2014, that follows David Thorpe, a writer, in his quest to understand his “gay voice” as a part of his identity. The documentary begins with his interaction with a speech pathologist who helps him identify the aspects of his voice that vary from the standard. He reaches out to his friends for their opinions. They express confusion because they believe he is turning his back on the person he has become for his desire to detach his “gay voice” from himself. But Thorpe sees his voice as negatively his identity; he thinks his voice is met with prejudice, even if it is naturally his own.

In 2010, Nikki Araguz Loyd campaigned for mayor in Wharton County, Texas. Her campaign became fraught by scandal when (as she mentions in her blog) her previous lawyer, Attorney Frank Mann, circulated emails containing her medical records. These revealed that she is a transgendered woman who is also HIV positive. Shortly after that, Loyd was further devastated when her husband, Capt. Thomas Araguz, died while fighting a fire.

This past Halloween night, I went to go see a live performance of the Rocky Horror Picture Show (as is tradition) in Emens Auditorium. The film, released in 1975, featured a number of characters and themes that set it apart from most other films of the time, and most films today for that matter. In fact, in spite of some of its outdated language (for instance, the word ‘transvestite’ isn’t as charming and endearing as Tim Curry led us to believe), the film is still very popular and influential to this day, having gathered a cult following and established itself as a Halloween tradition for many.

Published in 1991, Odd Girls and Twilight Lovers recounts the romantic relationships of lesbians of all ages, over the course of six decades. Faderman achieves a narrative of profundity and fundamental humanity within a culture that is often viewed as perverse by heteronormative society. Based in the facts of her own life, Faderman’s story shows the tender, personal side of the evolution of lesbian identity in the United States. She succeeds in documenting the paradox of tolerance and intolerance that lesbians faced throughout an era of immense social change.

Lancelot waits until the moon is shining high overhead through his window and as soon as he sees it he quickly throws back the covers and swings his feet around to the floor. He jerks on his boots and throws a black cape around him. The last thing he grabs before leaving his room is his sword—which he buckles to his belt. Walking up to the door he puts his ear against it and listens. He counts off thirty silent breaths and opens the door just enough to stick his head through it. Looking up and down the stone hallway and seeing nobody in the flickering torch light, he slips out of his room and just as silently shuts his door. Wrapping his black cape around him and putting the hood around his head, he slips into the shadows.
