If you have worn down the buttons on your television remote by scanning through an endless sea of shows, then pause your restless finger for a moment and upgrade to HBO. HBO’s binge worthy show Looking, aired in 2014, will have you distracted from your winter blues and enthralled in the San Francisco lifestyle. The show begins with the introduction of Patrick (or Pat) cruising in the woods. If you feel left out about what cruising could possibly mean, don’t; just watch and all will be explained. After he flees his meeting with the stranger in the woods, the audience is introduced to his two best friends. Looking focuses around three main characters, Patrick, Augustín, and Dom as they navigate through dating, work, and what it means to reach thirty. As the show progresses, each character is developed, revealing his unique struggles and temptations.

Her breath warmed my cheek making it red and irritated. I shifted my shoulders and scooted closer to the edge of the bed clutching the sheets to my bare chest. A frustrated sigh wheezed through my weathered lips and I glowered at the popcorn ceiling above me. This was the moment my epiphany was supposed to come, the moment all my troubles were to be realized as worth something. But no such comfort lingered. This woman beside me didn’t make me feel complete, or remotely understood. The air caught in my throat, every breath she took suffocated me a little more. Slipping from the sheets I bundled my scattered clothes in my arms, and haphazardly threw them on my body as I exited the apartment like a commonplace hookup.

Gregg Araki’s film adaption of Scott Heim’s 1995 novel Mysterious Skin is a heartbreaking and gut-wrenching tale of acceptance, mourning, and forgiveness. Mysterious Skin stars a young Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Brady Corbet as Neil McCormick and Brian Lackey respectfully. Only moments into the film, the watcher is shown that Neil and Brian had been molested by their baseball coach at a young age. Though this trauma involved both of the boys, Mysterious Skin illustrates the difference in pain and how they choose to deal with it. Neil becomes a male prostitute, sleeping with mainly older men while being very sexually irresponsible. In turn, Brian secludes himself. He becomes more shy and reserved and believes his difference to be an effect of a past alien abduction.

What comes to your mind when you think of Victorian England? Confining corsets and waist coats? Strict moral codes? Chimney sweeps? All true. However, in Sarah Waters’s novel Tipping the Velvet, gender roles and other societal expectations of the Victorian time period are flipped on their heads when she writes queer characters who are free to live uncloseted, gender bend, and go to gay and lesbian bars without fear of being ostracized or —worst of all—imprisoned for “sexual deviance.”

On Nov. 13, 21-year-old Vicky Thompson hung herself in her jail cell. Thompson, a transgender woman from Keighley, West Yorkshire, U.K., had been placed in an all-male prison despite a request from her solicitor according to the BBC. During her trial, Thompson’s solicitor told the judge that she was “essentially a woman” having lived as a woman since her early adolescence. The solicitor requested that Thompson be placed in a woman’s prison in Wakefield, West Yorkshire. The request, however, was ignored, and Thompson was incarcerated at Armley, Leeds, an all-male jail.
