Muncie - Wapahani volleyball began their warmups tonight in warm-up shirts that read “Don’t Be Satisfied”. The team embodied that message and competed last night with an unsatisfied mentality. Senior Sophia Beeson came up with the saying this offseason and encouraged the team throughout their training with that quote. “To me, it means never being satisfied with the level you’re competing at right now,” she said, “Never be complacent and always want to be better. We embody that persona and always look to make plays better than the last one.”The Delta Eagles fell to that unsatisfied Wapahani team last night in the 2024 season opener in 5 sets. Wapahani got off to a hot start taking the first two sets from the blue and gold. Beeson felt a rush before the first serve and throughout the first set.“We were literally so excited leading up to this game,” Beeson said. “This is exactly what we prepared for and we have been getting ready for all summer. We were just so high on adrenaline and the atmosphere here tonight got us going early.”Squaring off with a Delaware County foe on opening night made for an interesting match-up. Most of the girls spent the offseason training together and some play for the same club teams. “I think we do see this as a rivalry game,” Beeson said. “I think we see it like that because we intermix a lot in the offseason. We always want to beat up on them when we can, similar to other area schools.”Wapahani’s solid start came at the expense of a sluggish opening for Delta. Eagles head coach Kylie Johnson felt like her team was asleep for the first two sets of the match. “I don’t think we even started playing until the last 10 points in the third [set],” Johnson said. “My words to them after the second was that we have got to start playing sooner and get our heads into it sooner.”After taking the third set, Johnson felt her team took some momentum with them and ran with it in the fourth.“It was an aggressive huddle but we had the momentum and we needed to use it and start playing at a higher level,” she said. “Once we got there, I told them we needed to stay and not let up. We need to start games that way.”Even after winning their season opener, Wapahani head coach Valorie Wells was unsatisfied with her team's performance. She referenced their motto and recognized they have more to work on even after the win.“We really try to remember and know that win or lose, we can’t be satisfied with our work,” she said. “Like tonight, great win, but we cannot be satisfied because there is still a lot of work to do. I just hope our team keeps that in mind throughout the practices and games this season.”Taking two sets and then dropping two could be an issue in a match. However, the Raiders did that tonight and still were able to secure their victory. “I kept telling them to stay together and be good teammates no matter what. We got kind of selfish at times and I feel like that cost us those two sets,” Wells said. “We were making too many errors and got frazzled within ourselves. I kept reminding them to stay together and play as one and that got us through the fifth set.”Even with a loss, the young Delta squad – which includes four freshmen and three sophomores – took a lot of lessons away from the game.“We have sweet kids on our team and they tend to be timid. Part of being a freshman is not wanting to mess up and that kind of leads to the tendency of making errors,” Johnson said. “I want them to learn that they need to take charge and just make plays. If we can do that they won’t make as many errors and that will take care of itself. They have made leaps and bounds though already and I am proud of their growth.”Senior Addie Phillippe led Delta with 18 kills, junior Maddie Grove followed with 14 and senior Brylie Tuttle led the team with 14 digs. Wapahani will stay on the road and play Lapel for their next game on Thursday, August 22 at 7 p.m. while Delta will stay at home playing Jay County on the same night at the same time.Contact Logan Connor at email logan.connor@bsu.edu or on X at @_loganconnor

GASTON, IN - The 2024 Delaware County volleyball season got underway Tuesday evening with the Daleville Broncos (2-0) traveling to take on the Wes-Del Warriors (0-1)for the first inter-county match for either squad. For the maroon and gray, this was the first action of the new season. The black and gold were eyeing some revenge after the Warriors swept the Broncos in both matches last season. Daleville came out swinging early showing their hunger to take down their rival and exact their vengeance from last season. The Broncos jumped out to an early 15-8 lead in the opening set and were feeding off of the energy from their bench.“I’ve told them everybody has a role,” Daleville head coach Gayle Hicks said. “Even if you’re not on the court, you’re still a part of the team and you make a difference.”It was a very different feel on the opposing side of the court as the Warriors were visibly frustrated with their play.“I thought we competed well,” Wes-Del head coach Jon Vernon said. “We just have to be able to play at that pace. It’s just a different type of pace with the freshman playing at that level.”With the black and gold jumping out to an early lead, the Warriors never could gain any traction offensively and struggled for the entirety as Daleville took the opening set 25-11.The Broncos were playing extremely well and the offense was firing on all cylinders thanks in large part to sophomore outside hitter Maddie Rees. “It’s going to be fun the next couple of years with her,” Hicks said. “She does not lack confidence, she’s always been strong and played with the older girls too. She just goes right in there.”The youth of Wes-Del played a significant role throughout the match. With the fast-paced play of the Broncos, the younger Warriors couldn’t keep up and looked a little overwhelmed in what was many of their first varsity matches.“I think it was fast and that’s part of the problem,” Vernon said. “Right now we’ve got four freshmen who’re starting and the speed of the game is so fast right now they’re having to adjust on the fly, and this is the first time they’ve ever played at this level.”The exact opposite was true for the black and gold who have a plethora of players with much experience with the fast-paced play of varsity ball. However, despite the experience on the roster, it was lone sophomore, Rees, that made her presence felt the most on the court.“The teammates play a big role, my sister [Cassidy Rees] being one of them,” Rees said. “I play offseason with a lot of them too so it’s easy to feel supported and feel welcome on the team as such a young player.”After the first set was in the books, there was no looking back for the Broncos, who kept their foot on the gas pedal. The second set was identical to the opener with the black and gold dominating it from the opening serve, taking the second set 25-11.Daleville would continue to lay it on in the third set as the Broncos hitters could not miss and the Wes-Del defense could not find any answers as the black and gold completed the sweep in the third set, 25-19.Despite the season opener for the maroon and gray not going their way, Vernon – a first year head coach – knows it’s a process to develop a team, and the youth will grow and step into the varsity level of play as the season progresses.“I’m really excited because we’ve got a really big seventh and eighth grade class coming in,” he said. “We’ve got all these freshmen and will only lose one senior at the end of this year. We can really build something and they’re getting experience right now that other freshmen aren’t.”Contact David Moore with comments at david.moore@bsu.edu or on X @gingninj63

Editor's Note: The Ball State Daily News contacted Muncie Central for this article but did not receive a response. The 2024 Delaware County volleyball season is just around the corner, and while last season had its headliners, 2024 has some hidden gems to offer as well. Head coaches around the county highlighted some athletes to watch out for throughout the campaign.YorktownHead Coach: Stephanie Bloom 2023 Record: 27-6Senior Shanese Williams - Middle Hitter“She’s returning from a season-ending knee injury from last year,” Bloom said via email. “With being unable to play for nearly a year, she’s experienced some growing pains getting back into the swing of things. But as she’s become more confident, she’s looking more like the player she was before the injury. I believe she’ll continue to improve and be an integral part of our offense and what she can bring defensively at the net.”Senior Ari Wright - Outside Hitter“She is being asked to play a different role this year and we think her offense on the right side will disrupt defenses on the other side of the net,” Bloom said via email. “She is playing with more grit as a senior and will be a huge asset to the team.” DeltaHead Coach: Kylie Johnson2023 Record: 9-14Senior Addie Phillips - Outside Hitter/Setter“Addie has been a full-time varsity player for four years. She was All-County for the last two years. She committed to Polk State in Florida and will be our offensive leader.” Johnson said via email.Senior Brylie Tuttle - Libero“She’s our returning Libero who gets better and better every season. She is our defensive anchor and takes charge of the passer on serve receive,” Johnson said via email. WapahaniHead Coach: Valorie Wells 2023 Record: 19-9Sophia Beeson - Six-Rotation Player“Her ability to be quick and run plays with a fast arm is big for us,” Wells said via text message. “While also being a great defender / serve receiver. She can hit the ball hard and has great control with her platform in her serve receive. She is our power/grit player.” Kami Rivers - Six-Rotation Player“Her ability to hit different shots on the court and place the ball with power and control is a key player for us,” Wells said via text message. “She also has the ability to read the court as a defender and not let the ball drop. She is also one of the most consistent servers/aces on the team that we need. She is our IQ / grit player.” CowanHead Coach: Amber Huber2023 Record: 8-19Sophomore Savannah Hall - Middle Hitter“We are hoping to get her more involved in the offense this season,” Huber said via email. “She was an [Outside Hitter] last season, but she will be a [Middle Hitter] this season. Savannah is aggressive and a go-getter. Getting her involved in the offense is going to be important for us, but she is also one of our best defensive players and serve-receive passers.”Junior Keira Drew - Outside Hitter“She is going to see a lot more sets this year and is capable of hitting left, middle, or right side,” Huber said via email. “She has a lot of potential if she takes advantage of it. She will mostly play front row, but she has a great serve so she will see a little backcourt time as well.” DalevilleHead Coach: Gayle Hicks2023 Record: 20-10Senior Trishell Johnson - Middle Hitter“Trish could get the record of 1,000 kills for her career this year,” Hicks said via email. “She leads our team in kills and has great leadership on the court. She’s going to be one of our captains this season. Coming off a year where she earned all-conference and all-county honors, she’ll play a big role for us this season.”Senior Cassidy Rees - Setter“Cassidy could set another career record this season as well. She’s getting close to 1,000 sets on her career.” Hicks said via email. “She is just another great leader for us on the court. Her mission is to have her best year yet being a senior this year.”Wes-DelHead Coach: Jon Vernon2023 Record: 25-7Senior Amelia Hudson-Roberts - Outside Hitter, Middle Hitter“She is the only returning Starter from the 27-5 team of 2023, played on Munciana Aztecs this Club Season for Pancho Alavarez, and is a tall, strong, and athletic player who will be the leader of our team this year,” Vernon said via email.Junior Taylor Freeman - Setter“She will be the ball-handling leader on our team for 2024. Taylor has a great work ethic every day in practice and pushes herself and others to get better. She’s just a natural leader.” Vernon said via email. Muncie BurrisHead Coach: Jim Craig2023 Record: 31-4 and 2A state championsSenior Lilly Howell - Middle Blocker“Lilly is looking forward to her senior season,” Craig said via email. “She has played in every varsity match since her freshman year and brings significant experience to the court. She has terrific skills, but her real strength is her resilience and leadership she commands each day.”Junior Mya Trammell - Outside Hitter“Though recovering from an ACL injury, Mya has made remarkable progress likely due in part to her considerable drive to be ready for her junior year,” Craig said via email. “She was stellar in the state championship match in November and hopes to continue her impressive play this season. Her work ethic and leadership skills have helped guide our preparation.”Contact David Moore with comments at david.moore@bsu.edu or on X @gingninj63
