For some people, fall break means getting back to family and friends; taking a much needed rest from school stress by getting away to relax and recharge. But, for some of us who aren’t lucky enough to escape for a relaxing getaway, there’s still some things you can do here in Muncie to unwind, and feel like you are in paradise, rather than Funcie.

What song has everybody jumping up and down and ready to drop all their adult responsibilities to run to the club? That song would be “Closer” by The Chainsmokers featuring Halsey. This song is the definition of catchy. Just from listening to it one time, I have the chorus memorized, and this is not a joke. “Closer” came out towards the end of the summer and very quickly became the end of the summer anthem. It gives off a very free spirit and a Saturday night out with your girls kind of feel. According to an online music review site, “Your EDM, in three days of being released the song made it to ITunes #1 and a short time after that it had the #1 spot on the Billboards 100. Seems like The Chainsmokers took the world by surprise. But I can’t say I’m shocked.

We went out onto the streets of Ball State’s campus to find these lovely ladies expressing the trend. The first boy who kissed me kissed me clumsy and fast. His lips couldn’t find mine right and his hands treated my hips like unmoving stones. He was much taller than I was, with bright pink hair. He kissed every other boy like he kissed me. He told me he kissed other boys because I moved “too slow.”
“Is it a boy or a girl?” I ask. The mother tells me she and her husband are waiting to find out the sex until birth. I know this shouldn’t annoy me. I should be happy they are bringing another person into the world, that they have the means to take care of this child. That they love each other and their baby and they will sacrifice whatever they have to, to make sure the child grows up with their needs met. I know I should have instead asked, “Is your baby healthy?” But I don’t.
The subject of this interview requested to have their name changed for this blog.
My journey to ally was one that took a lot longer than you would think it would for a person as smart as myself. (I blame the brainwashing.)
Two by two they started to come.
The documentary, The Out List, debuted on HBO just after anniversary of the Stonewall riots in 2013. The director, Timothy Greenfield-Sanders, is known for his documentaries including The Black List and The Latino List. The Out List has a premise quite similar to those films; he brings together a diverse population of Americans to discuss their experience as being gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and queer. But the initial draw of the film was its showcasing several out celebrities.
Marginalized people- this is one way to describe the queer community. But what if you happen to be “double the queer” because of your race? Today in our society, dialogue about race is happening every day (and sometimes it’s not constructive). There may be many voices on this topic, but there is a voice many don’t think about. As a gay black man, Jarret Neal’s perspective provides a worldview that people both outside and inside of the community may not be aware of. Through his collection of thirteen essays, "What Color is Your Hoodie?," he provides pieces to the puzzle of this man’s world.
“He wore a sapphire suit, the first time I ever saw him,” Bernie said about my Grandfather Bob, “it made his eyes dance.”
James P. Sheffield, a transgender man living in Georgia, tweeted Governor Pat McCrory after North Carolina’s controversial House Bill 2 was signed into law.
Every story was a man in an alleyway,
While doing some research on chest binding, I found that all of the questions that I had could be answered from someone with experience. When discussing trans issues, it’s best to just shut up and listen to a trans person. I interviewed E* who has started the journey of chest binding. They give insight into the decision to chest bind as well as what chest binding means to them.
In the 2014 Mexican dramedy, Four Moons, directed by Sergio Tovar Velarde, four storylines are tied to the four lunar phases, representing four separate stages in life; although this connection is only mentioned during the opening credits. It was considered for Mexico’s entry as Best Foreign Language Film at the 88th Academy Awards, but 600 Miles was chosen instead. Four Moons is a stunningly candid portrait of gay men and boys in modern day Mexico. It tells its stories in a similar manner to the 2003 film Love Actually, as the story jumps from plot line to plot line. The stories are played out in interwoven sections occurring during the same period of time but never together as a single story arc.
The Georgia Legislature has passed House Bill 757, the “religious freedom” bill, or in other terms, the anti-gay bill. The bill gained its nickname from its unmistakably discriminatory content. And the only person who stands between it being finalized or being crushed, is Georgia Governor Nathan Deal. The pressure is on.
