As the National LGBTQ Task Force’s annual “Creating Change” conference opened in Denver on February 5th, a group of queer and trans people of color rushed the stage in protest. Spurred on primarily by the recent death of Jessie Hernandez, an unarmed 17-year-old queer Latina, who was killed by a Denver police officer, the group’s protest was also in response to the murders of Lamia Beard, Ty Underwood, Goddess Edwards, Yazmin Payne, and Taja Gabrielle de Jesus -- all trans women of color killed in America in the last month. Keep it to the right—no, the left. Keep it inside you and don’t let it go. Don’t let it hurt anyone else, don’t let it out. Don’t let it sit around either, just cage it up. Some animals strike from beyond the scenes, inflicting venomous wounds. They need caging the most. Stop it in its tracks, then put a muzzle on it. Your hands are shaking, I know, but it’s ok; we are all here for you. Sometimes it’s your fault, but it’s always the beast’s fault and that’s the only real matter here. Screw around in your brain and mess you up good. If that’s the case you’re just the lycanthropic vermin, waiting to bite another victim with your cursed fire. So don’t let that moon shine on you. Help each other and we will help you; because we know the best of us agree, there’s too much AID to go around already.
