MUNCIE, Ind. — The Common Market, which is labeled a convenience store, over the years has become more of a community space, where people have pitched in and made the space available for everyone.
The place was founded in 2016 when owner Mike Martin had a dream for his community. He wanted to bring more culture to the city that would start people on their very own journey.
“That was part of the idea, is really making something culturally cool here in Muncie to be a place where performers and artists can have a place, you’ve got to start somewhere,” said Martin. “This is a little spot where you start before you go out to take it to the world.”
However, performers weren’t the only thing on Martin's mind. He offers his space for many free events. He has used his open space for Ball State students, drag shows and even the mayor.
Martin attributes his success to the help of the community around him. Some donate food and clothing to him, who in turn, gives back to those in need. It is important to him to make sure that the donations are not resold and are going to people who need them.
“People would show up immediately and say I have stuff I was going to donate, but then I heard about you guys and you’re local, and I want to make sure it goes to somebody who needs it,” Martin stated. “That’s how the donation station came to be.”
Martin said he feels that staying in a local business is crucial, he made it clear that this was one of the things that made The Common Market so special in the first place.
According to Martin, the community is one of the main things that keeps the business running, and for those who want to help out, something as simple as buying a pizza can make a lasting impact.
If you’re looking for a place to get back in touch with your community, they are located on the corner of W Eighth St. and South Hoyt Ave., Monday through Saturday from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m..
