MUNCIE, Ind. – Shopping for clothes can be a challenge. If you want to feel comfortable it means not dressing the best, and if you want to dress nice then you have to give up that comfortably. Whimsies sets out to provide those who feel like there aren't a lot of options for them.
Owner, Judith Gill started the store around six and half years ago. The boutique was originally online and slowly transformed into a store for the public.
In addition to the clothes being comfortable, Gill said she tries to make sure that her customers feel welcomed as well.
“We can offer private shopping,” explained Gill. “Say they’re trans and they are not comfortable coming in on a regular day with our customers. We can set up an after hours session for them and they can bring their friends and model for each other. You know the same thing goes for those with sensory issues or anxiety around crowds. We are happy to accommodate.”
Within the store, there are a variety of patterns and designs. Three local artists, who work with Gill, help bring her ideations to life.
“I think it’s a good outlet for them,” said Gill. “It’s exciting for us because even though we still use off the shelf stuff that we licensed, I love things that are just ours.”
The artist will take Gill’s request no matter what it is. Whether it’s Cryptids or Godzilla they always indulge her. Just like how the artist indulges and supports her, Gill’s family and the public have always supported her ambitions.
Gill explains why she works with local artists and how important it is to shop locally.
“The main thing is that people shop local. If it’s not here, pick another local place. You would be surprised how few people can make a difference. Even just sharing and spreading the word helps,” expressed Gill.
The store speaks for itself as it has won multiple awards. Which you see as soon as you walk into the store. Whimsies was named best boutique and spirit of small business all which were voted by the public. The proof that the store will continue to help those find their own comfy style.
