In 1981, the Ball State Daily News Sports Section created a section in the print newspaper that reviewed weekly sports scores and updates from Ball State athletics. Before the 2024-25 semester break, the sports editors came together and decided to bring the weekly rendition back. But now, it will be a weekly online update.
Feb. 16
Men’s tennis loses to Cleveland State 3-4
Ball State men’s tennis lost its road contest at Cleveland State by a score of 3-4. The 4-4 Cardinals dropped a nailbiter that saw the Vikings win the top two doubles courts. Mason Tran and Jacks Lancaster were victorious in singles, as well as Jenson Bicanic.
Gymnastics goes 1-2 in Denver Quad Meet
The gymnastics squad traveled to the Mile High City to compete in the Denver Univesity Quad Meet. They lost to Denver and Oregon State but beat Texas Women’s University by a score of 194.950 to 194.200. They scored 49.100 on the bars rotation, led by Ashley Szymanski who scored 9.875. They tied their season-best on vault with a 48.825. Carissa Martinez, Lindsey Girard and Zoe Middleton all scored 9.775s on vault.

Men’s basketball loses a close game at Toledo 66-67
Junior guard Jermahri Hill hit what was called a game-winning shot on the floor, but was then overturned after review, in a heartbreaking loss to the Rockets. Hill’s shot seemingly went in and was called good on the floor, but after a questionable review, the call was overturned. Hill had 16 points and senior center Payton Sparks had 16 as well. Junior guard Juanse Gorosito had 13 with three deep balls.

Women’s basketball drops first MAC game at Toledo 66-70
In the women’s basketball team’s first conference loss of the season, senior Alex Richard scored a career-high 33 points. Despite Richard’s career performance and double-digit points from two other Cardinals, the Rockets came out on top. Toledo led the entire fourth quarter, but Ball State got it as close as two points. Toledo went 4-for-4 from the free throw line to ice the game.
Feb. 20
Baseball wins opener at Sacramento State 4-3
Ball State baseball continued its hot start with a West Coast win over Sac State. Starter Connor Hutchinson went 5.0 innings, struck out six and walked none. Garrett Harker came out of the bullpen and went 2.1 innings, striking out two and walking two. Third baseman Alex Richter was 2-for-2 and reached base five times in the contest. He had 2 RBIs and first baseman Blake Bevis also had an RBI and a hit.
Men’s volleyball sweeps Lindenwood (25-15, 25-17, 25-22)
No. 8 men’s volleyball team swept Midestwern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association opponent Lindenwood. The Cardinals continued to dominate in the MIVA, hitting .333 in the opening set. Vanis Buckholz played a major role defensively with four blocks. Patrick Rogers had 10 kills, Wil Basilio had eight and Braydon Savitske-Lynde had six with three blocks.
Feb. 21
Softball goes 2-0 on the day at the Charlotte Invitational
Ball State softball beat Lehigh 2-0 and Albany 9-1 in a double-header in Charlotte, North Carolina. Junior starter Ella Whitney threw a complete-game shutout against Lehigh. She gave up just two hits and five baserunners through 7.0 innings. In game two against Albany, freshman starter Breanna Severino picked up her first collegiate win over the Great Danes. She gave up six hits and one run over 5.0 innings.
Baseball drops two tight double-header games to Sacramento State
Ball State baseball experienced a hiccup on what has been an otherwise successful opening two weeks. The opening game saw Sac State hit a walkoff two-run homerun in the bottom of the ninth inning for a 6-5 victory. Ball State got out to a 4-0 lead in the fourth but was unable to score the remaining five innings. Left-hander Keegan Johnson went 6.1 innings, seven strikeouts and two walks. Game two saw a 2-0 Sac State win. Right-hander Jacob Hartlaub went 5.0 innings, nine strikeouts, and a lone two-run double in the fourth. Those two runs were all that crossed the plate in the nightcap.
Feb. 22
Softball beats Lehigh 15-4
The Cardinals gave up three runs in the first three innings before scoring 15 runs in five of their own plate appearances. Sophomore right-hander Brinkley Kita picked up the win, limiting Lehigh to five hits and four runs over 5.0 innings of work. Junior catcher Gabbie Evans hit a two-run homer, her second of the weekend.
Men’s tennis beats IU Indy and IU East at home
Ball State swept its home doubleheader at Northwest YMCA against IU Indy and East. The two wins improve the Cardinals’ record to 6-4 on the season. Ball State beat IU Indy 5-2 for its 22nd consecutive win over the Jaguars. Ball State beat the Red Wolves 7-0 in its second match of the day.
Men’s volleyball loses to No. 17 McKendree
In the Cardinals MIVA contest at McKendree, the Bearcats came out on top in a five-set thriller. Ryan Louis had 21 kills, Patrick Rogers had 15 and Vanis Buckholz had seven. Ball State won the second and fourth sets, but ultimately fell to the Bearcats in five.
Women’s tennis loses to Youngstown State 3-4
The loss halted the Cardinals three-game win streak and set their season record to 3-2. Chloe Brown won both her singles and doubles matches against the 7-5 Penguins.
Baseball wins weekend finale at Sacramento State
The baseball squad won its final game against Sac State 13-10. Ball State used 13 hits and a pair of three-run homers from Blake Bevis and Ty Davis en route to the win. Sac State committed five errors in the contest. Ball State trailed by as many as seven at one point, but scored nine unanswered while Garrett Harker threw the final 2.2 innings to guide Ball State to the win. The team will open home play Feb. 25 against Illinois State.
