MUNCIE, Ind. – Sparky’s Corner Greenhouse holds a variety of plants throughout the backyard of business owner Jeffrey Brubaker. This small, yet sustainable business, focuses on caring for and selling plants of all different kinds. From annuals to perennials, to even succulents, this business has it all.
What does it take to allow plants to survive in these harsh winters? A sustainable environment is created not only by the greenhouses themselves but also by the people who care for the plant life inside.
The business itself comprises three different greenhouses, outside gardens and one giant greenhouse frame currently in production. Each greenhouse building is set at a different temperature and moisture level based on the plants that are in each one. It takes a great deal of care and precision to create these different environments based on the species of plants inside.
Each season has its popular plant purchase, but one stands above them all. Geraniums are highly the most popular plant species sold from Sparky’s Corner Greenhouse.
“Last year we sold about 880 geraniums. We had a variety of foliage 6 6-inch and gallon pots. People loved them,” Burbaker said.
Winter specifically is a slow time for sales. However, it is one of the busiest times of the year when it comes to taking care of plants. Preparing plants for the spring season takes a lot of time. Between soaking seeds, transplanting plants, watering and more, winter keeps the business runners busy. Working with botany is a 365-day job. Sometimes, part of the workload is helping buyers decide what plant would be best for them.
“We’re just a little hidden gem in Muncie. We cater a lot of the garden plants, and to mom and pop who just want to come in and buy a few plants at a time we give more attention to detail because we are small,” Sparky explained.
