Ball State’s Student Government Association (SGA)’s Election Board Commissioner, Brooke Stallings, spoke about the requirements to be a president, vice president, and cabinet member ahead of the organization’s student elections.
Some important dates include Feb. 5 at 5:30 p.m. which is the first debate, held in the Arts and Journalism Building in room 175, which will introduce the candidates and their platform points. Each ticket member will be at this event.
The presidential debate is on Feb. 11 at 5:30 p.m. in Teacher’s College room 120. Both presidential candidates will be asked questions about their platform points and what they want to do for Ball State’s campus. Students will be allowed to ask questions; vice presidential candidates will not be in attendance.
The vice presidential debate is Feb. 13 in Teacher's College room 120 at 5:30 p.m. This debate is just like the presidential election but instead, it just includes the vice presidential candidates. All three debates are open to the public and students.
Following Stallings’ presentation, SGA welcomed Tristan McPherson, a senate applicant for the At-large caucus. McPherson is a first-year economics student applying to have a seat in SGA because he “wants change” within the university.
“I have a passion for government. I'm interested in change. I have a strong desire for community involvement,” McPherson said.
McPherson’s goals are to bring back a bus-tracking app and have a move-in crew for new and returning students.
He was voted into the seat 28-2 with one abstention.
SGA had one budget request from collegiate Sen. Sydney Schmitt The amount requested was $214.92 for stickers for each college that SGA could use at events.
This request was approved 28-1 with 3 abstentions.
After the request, President Noah Poole followed with executive reports. Poole started by acknowledging transportation is an issue for many students, especially since it is colder out, However, he said Transportation Services is currently working on an app to track campus buses.
Advisor Abby Haworth reminded attendees that next week is Unity Week and encouraged senators to go to some of the events that Ball State is offering this week.
With no new or unfinished business, the meeting was adjourned. The next meeting open to the public is on Jan. 22 at 3:15 p.m. in the L.A. Pittenger Student Center.
