MUNCIE, Ind. — The #First2Fly Resource Fair was held Thursday in Student Success Cardinal Halls A and B from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.. This was one of several events held during the First Gen Week at Ball State.
Assistant dean and director of student success, Tréon McClendon, says these events are designed to get first-generation students involved.
“We have been working to create an experience for our students,” McClendon said. “And we want to make sure that all students have a voice, are included, and are heard throughout the week.”
While this event is geared toward first-generation students on campus, McClendon believes that everyone should have a seat at the table in an effort to bring awareness of the center’s services.
“Ultimately, we want to bring awareness to the whole idea of being a first-generation student,” McClendon said. “Some students may have friends who are first-generation, and we want to tell them what that means and give them support.”
Through these events, McClendon hopes students who do show up are able to learn different skills and things to remember, all in an effort to do great things in the future.
“Their future lies in their hands,” McClendon said. “And so we ask, ‘How do they actually take those experiences and create the lives that they want?’”
The final event during the First Gen Week Friday will be the First-Generation College Celebration, an annual national event to celebrate first-generation students. Come to the Multicultural Center on campus featuring refreshments, prize drawings, and conversations with first-generation students and staff.
