MUNCIE, Ind. — The Ball State Men’s Tennis team hosted their first of two invitationals this month over the weekend.
The Butler Bulldogs, Dayton Flyers, IU-Indy Jaguars, and Xavier Musketeers all visited the Bill Richards Tennis Courts from Friday to Sunday morning. The Cardinals took on all three teams in a hidden dual format, meaning only individual scores were official, and team scores were not recorded.
The Cardinals started hot on Friday in singles play, winning four of their six matches against Butler. The men also tallied a Petar Petrovic victory over IU Indy in straight sets (6-4, 6-4). Ball State added a doubles victory later in the day as Ian Brady and Anthony Shakolav, both transfers, took down the Xavier duo of Andrew Spurk and Alex Koturski.
The men continued building momentum on a busy Saturday as they took on the Dayton Flyers in singles and doubles. Fans witnessed Cardinal victories in 6 of the 8 Flyer match-ups, with junior Jacks Lancaster and redshirt senior Sajin Smith winning their singles matches in straight sets. In addition to the strong showing against Dayton, Petrovic and Fletcher took home a doubles victory over Butler. Webster, Lancaster and Bicanic also earned singles wins against Xavier to close the afternoon.
The team stayed hot on Sunday morning, competing with IU-Indy, taking home three of four doubles matches against the Jaguars to close the tournament. Overall, the Cardinals won 20 three-day matches to open their season.
Men’s tennis will be back in action on the 28th as they’ll host Bellarmine, Butler and Xavier in the Cardinal Invitational.
