The Student Government Association (SGA) began its Mar.13 meeting with a presentation from special guest Amanda Nelson, a graduate assistant from the Multicultural Center. Nelson provided the senators with Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) training.
She informed them how to utilize the Multicultural Center spaces and how to contact them if anyone has questions or wants to schedule an event there. Nelson also encouraged the senators to collaborate with the Multicultural Center within their organizations.
Nelson then dove into the specific topics concerning DEI. She asked the senators questions about diversity and why it’s essential to maintain in politics. She also correctly defined intersectionality, privilege, oppression, marginality, etc.
To end her presentation, Nelson discussed how different identities affect each other, as “no person is a singular identity.” She provided guidelines to help assist the senators with DEI discussions.
“Everyone has different [types of] identities,” Nelson said. “You have race, education level, ethnicity, etc. Each and every one of those is going to affect the way that you view and interact with the world.”
