Ball State men’s and women’s swim and dive teams defeated IUPUI on Senior Night at the Lewellen Aquatic Center in Muncie. 

The women’s team claimed the win with a total score of 171-119.  The men’s team was in a dogfight for most of the meet but eventually beat out the Jaguars 164-136.

“We knew coming in that it was going to be a dogfight,” head coach J. Agnew said. “They are really well coached. I feel like both teams have very strong senior classes and so we knew it was going to be a battle, so it is nice to come up on top on senior night.”

Ball State’s meet against the Jaguars featured their senior day where the Cardinals recognized a total of 12 seniors on both the men's and women’s rosters, with eight of those 12 seniors being on the women’s side. Highlighting for the men’s team was senior Joey Garberick who placed first in the 100 breaststroke and second in the 200 breaststroke. 

“It’s meant a whole lot. We are all one big family here,” Garberick said. “Everybody gives something and it’s an incredible experience. When I got here it was a very different program and we have grown so much as a team over the past four years, it’s incredible.”

Also swimming for the men’s team was freshman Malcolm Slater who won two races in the 500 freestyle and 400 IM.

For the women’s team, senior Laura Wright had a strong performance as she finished first in the 100 and 200 breaststroke and took part in the first-place relays in the 200 medley relay.

“I thought we performed really well,” Wright said. “We threw down some fast times and the energy was really high which was exciting.”

Off the diving board, the Cardinals were locked into a close match with the Jaguars as Grace Walker took first in both the one-meter and the three-meter dives. IUPUI took second, third and fourth in both competitions, however, Walker finished with a lead of 10 or more points in the final scores.

For the men’s diving, senior Isaac Hunter led the way on the three-meter with a score of 313.05 while sophomore Porter Brovont led the Cardinals in scoring on the one-meter with a score of 317.70. However, both finished second behind IUPUI’s Sebastian Otero who won with a score of 334.73 on the one-meter and a score of 404.10 on the three-meter.

“It was our first co-ed duel meet this year, I think the energy really helped out divers,” diving coach Brendon Stevens said. “A lot of [personal records] on both boards, so I would say it is the best duel meet we have had this season. Grace Walker had her best meet this year, Isaac our senior [had his personal record] on both one meter and three meter and Porter [had his personal record] on one meter.”

With the win both the men’s and women’s teams remain undefeated in duel meets this season as both sit at 2-0 on the season.

Ball State women’s swim and dive will be back in action Saturday, Nov. 4 at noon as they get set to host Eastern Michigan, while the men’s team will get set to head to Indianapolis for the House of Champions Invite on November 16-18.
