ANDERSON, INDIANA---Longtime Anderson Speedway track announcer shuts the mic off one last time after an impressive run.
For 75 years, Anderson Speedway has brought entertainment to race fans from across the country, and for the past four decades, one man has brought that excitement to race day. Denny Adams has been the voice of Anderson Speedway for the past 43 years and his race is coming to the final lap.
When asked about what announcing was like to him, Adams was left almost speechless
“I’m only the second announcer ever for the track,” Adams said.
The original voice of Anderson Speedway, Dutch Hurst, announced for fans in the first 32 years of the track’s existence before passing the torch to an eager 30 year-old Adams. Adams now in the twilight of his career looks back at how he got his start.
Before Adams took the reins away from Hurst, he was involved in smaller jobs in the tower at the track, right where Hurst announced. Adams had mentioned back then how he wanted to announce and even follow up Dutch’s dynasty.
“If Dutch ever gets sick or dies or wants to retire, I’d really like to have a chance at it,” Adams said.
Adams is set to cross the finish line the day his career revved up on the 4th of July. As that time draws closer, Adams reflects on the legacy he leaves behind.
“I hope I’ve made their race night entertaining,” Adams said.
He said he wanted to ensure that when fans came to the track, they were in for a good time and a fun night.
Cory Hensley has been announced as Adams’ successor, who was suggested by Adams himself.
With the racing season right around the corner, Adams will soon take his final lap with Hensley set to take the wheel. Adams’ last show will be held on July 4th, for Figure 8 Madness.
