MUNCIE, Ind.--- Head coach Michael Lewis in his first year for Ball State Men’s Basketball envisions a bright future for his squad. Despite winning this week to Indiana University South Bend 86-72, coach Lewis felt the team left a lot to be desired on the court.
“We had better players. I mean honestly it wasn’t really anything we did,” Lewis said. “I think South Bend probably for the majority of the game executed what they wanted to better than us quite frankly.”
Coach Lewis has high hopes for this team coming from the winning program UCLA on a mission to turn the program around from its once struggling days.
“I see the big picture, I know where we all want this program to be,” Lewis said. “ I truly believe we can get there with the guys in the program right now. I don’t think I need to go get players through recruiting.”
The big picture starts with Sophomore Guard Jaylin Sellers. From beginning the season injured, to coming off the bench, Sellers is catching fire early on in the season and has finally earned his spot in the starting lineup.
Coach Lewis said,”He’s earned the right to have a game like this with the work that he had this summer and this fall.”
Even after Sellers breakout performance, the sophomores mindset is still work, work, work, with a long season ahead.
“I feel like I put in the work for me to perform like that,” Sellers said. “As far as what I’m focusing on right now, is the defensive end.”
The Cardinals are nearing a perfect opportunity to prove themselves with a month-long stretch of road games coming up on the schedule. The Cardinals next game will be this Friday against the Vermont Catamounts in their last home game until January.
