As first reported by Jeff Passan of ESPN at 4:30 p.m., the Baltimore Orioles traded former All-Star first baseman/outfielder Trey Mancini to the Houston Astros August 1, 2022. At 5:09 p.m., less than one hour later, Passan reported former Ball State Baseball right-handed pitcher and Houston Astros fourth-round draft pick (2021) Chayce McDermott was on his way to Baltimore as part of this three-team trade centered around Mancini.
At 5:46 p.m., the Astros' Twitter page sent out a post confirming this trade, and three minutes later, the Orioles' Twitter page confirmed it, making it all but official the former Cardinal was traded. The Tampa Bay Rays were also involved in this trade.
McDermott was the No. 12 prospect in Houston's organization and sits at the same spot for Baltimore. In 2022, McDermott has posted a 6-1 record, a 5.50 ERA, 114 strikeouts and a 1.39 WHIP on 72 innings pitched, all for the Asheville Tourists, the Astros' High-A farm system affiliate. McDermott is set to join the Aberdeen IronBirds, the Orioles' High-A farm system affiliate.
