Every day, Teach For America (TFA) brings equitable education and opportunities to students across the United States. They work closely with students, educators, and various community members to create a lasting impact in communities.
Juliana Shamel, an alumna of Ball State, is among these individuals who have joined TFA and are actively making a difference. Shamel talks about how her time at Ball State prepared her for her career at TFA and how she now helps children throughout the country.
Meet Julianna Shamel:
Previously working as a Music Tutor and Voice Teacher at Ball State and as a Worship Leader at St. Maria Goretti Parish, Shamel uses her teaching skills and determination to inspire and aid others. “Knowledge is power, and I hope all the students I work with gain that,” said Shamel.
Julianna Shamel received a Masters in Music in Vocal Performance in 2021. Her time at Ball State University gave her a great understanding in time management and problem solving that she would use to contribute to TFA. Currently, Shamel is working as part of a diverse network of leaders as an elementary school teacher in Indianapolis Allegiant Prep Academy.
“It’s a very challenging job and requires a lot of patience and mindset training.” said Shamel. Yet, despite the challenge she hopes to inspire students around her through her work.
Work with Teach For America
There are multiple ways for students to get involved with the organization’s equity-focused mission, including professional development events, paid internships and fellowships, and the paid, post-graduate job opportunity that Shamel pursued. Becoming a corps member is a two-year commitment to serving as a full-time, salaried employee in schools across the country. Throughout the two years, TFA provides formal training, both personal and professional development, to support members in making an impact in the classroom and throughout their career pathway. TFA is committed to ensuring its members have the financial support they need in addition to their salary, and also offer transitional funding, financial opportunities with graduate programs across the country and access to the AmeriCorps Grant.
Over 64,000 corps members and alumni are part of Teach For America’s network, with many creating an impact in nearby Indianapolis and as far away as Honolulu.
