Muncie Animal Care and Services (MACS) is facing complications, as the number of pets under the care of the shelter has been increasing. It is holding an adoption even this week to help as many pets find a home as possible.
MACS has extended the Adopt-A-Thon event through Aug. 21, offering reduced adoption fees during normal business hours. The goal is to help as many kittens, cats and dogs find their forever homes.
Over the past month, MACS has had several neglect and rescue cases that have increased the shelter’s population to nearly 400 animals. This is well above and beyond the normal capacity of the facility.
MACS director Ethan Browning said the facility and staff have taken in nearly 1,700 animals this year as of July, which is well above half of the normal intake. MACS normally takes in about 3,000 animals annually.
The adoption event will run Monday, Aug. 16 through Saturday, Aug. 21 during normal business hours at the shelter.
All of the available animals are spayed and neutered, have had age appropriate vaccines and testing and come with a complimentary wellness exam with a participating veterinarian. The shelter asks that adopters come prepared with either a leash and collar for adoptable dogs, or a carrier for adoptable cats and kittens.
With the event, the shelter is changing their adoption fees for the week. Adoption rates will be the following: dogs $25, cats $10, kittens 2 for $10.
Free adoptions will be offered to first responders, active duty military and veterans, as well as seniors over the age of 50.
Senior animals over 7 years old and animals who have been with the facility for over 6 months will have all adoption fees waived.
The shelter is only able to accept cash or check for payment of fees at this time.
Every adopter during the event will receive a goody bag made by local Girl Scout Troop 2558 while supplies last and will be entered into a drawing for a prize basket. Adopters can also stop at MACS' Gotcha Day photo booth on their way out to take a picture with their new furry friend.
MACS will also have t-shirts for sale for $20, with the proceeds going to the MACS Foster Program.
Adopters that rent homes or apartments must provide a copy of their pet policy prior to adopting any animal. If adopters are interested in adopting a dog and currently have a dog in their home, a meet-and-greet is required at the shelter prior to an adoption or doggie date.
