Protesters gathered along the street outside the state mansion of Indiana Gov. Eric Holcomb Saturday in Indianapolis, demanding him to restart the economy, believing he overreached his power in implementing the stay-at-home order in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Some people stood by the sidewalk, while others drove by honking in support from their cars. People gathered carried signs and American flags and chanted slogans like "Open Indiana," "No more tyranny," and "The cure is worse than the disease."
According to the Associated Press, there were more than 200 people in attendance, although the rally wasn’t as large as a similar event Wednesday in Lansing, Michigan, which drew an estimated 3,000 to 4,000 people.
On Thursday, Holcomb joined governors of six other Midwest states — Illinois, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio and Wisconsin to announce a partnership to work in close coordination to reopen the economy in the Midwest region, according to a press release from the governor's office.
He announced Friday that Indiana's stay-at-home order, which would expire Monday, will be extended to May 1 as planning is underway to reopen parts of the state’s economy, according to the Associated Press.
According to Indiana State Department of Health, as of April 17, there have been 545 total deaths and 10,641 total positive cases of the virus in the state.
