MUNCIE, Ind.(NewsLink) - The freshmen have taken over the roster for Blackford girls basketball.
Olivia Leas and Liv Waters are leading the team in scoring in their first year of high school basketball.
After a coaching change before last year, head coach Mitch Waters has worked with the team to motivate them after going 1-21 last season. Waters said that all it took was “a couple of wins” to get his team motivated early in the season.
One factor hurting the team in their one-win season last year was ball handling. Turnovers plagued the Bruins offense, but Leas says that has changed because “no one could really handle the ball last year, and that’s why we had a lot of turnovers.” That was until she and Waters came up, significantly helping the flow of the offense.
Overall the experience has been a positive one for the young Bruins.
Liv Waters said, “these girls are really accepting of the underclassmen,” and Leas noted her favorite part of the game is “when they call my name out they say Olivia Leas freshman, and we're out there competing against older girls and it feels better when you win against the older girls."
Blackford is going into Sectionals coming off their first 10-win season since 2014-2015. It’s one in which they look to build off of February 7th at Taylor as they look to pull off the upset, and win their first sectional title since 2009.
