After a wet weekend of baseball, Ball State fell to Miami 5-6 in the final matchup of the series Sunday afternoon. The Redhawks took two of the three games against the Cardinals and now sit second in the Mid-American Conference standings.
The Cardinals came out hot in the postponed game when designated hitter, Griffin Hulecki, hit a three-run homer in the first inning. The redshirt junior would reach base four times on the afternoon. However, Miami’s defense held Ball State (17-17, 5-7 MAC) scoreless for the final five and two-thirds innings.
Miami (21-11, 8-4 MAC) thrived offensively this afternoon, and all series, with the long ball. Ross Haffey, Will Vogelgesang and Landon Stephens all notched homeruns. Haffey hit six home runs in the three-game series.
After being down two runs in the second, Ball State would retake the lead in the fourth with RBIs from sophomore Noah Powell and junior Chase Sebby.
Stephens’ solo home run off of Ball State reliever freshman Cody Freed in the top of the seventh inning was enough for Miami to secure the victory.
Right-handed pitcher Drey Jameson started the game for the Cardinals and pitched into the sixth inning. The freshman left the game with a 5-4 lead, seven strikeouts and a runner still on base.
The Cardinals left 11 runners stranded on the day, which proved to be costly in the one-run loss.
Ball State travels to Bloomington, Indiana, Wednesday as it takes on Indiana at 6:05 p.m.
