First quarter
Ball State wins the toss and defers to the second half. The opening kickoff bounces out of the end zone for a touchback.
Toledo is aggressive early with 11-yard reverse to sophomore receiver Danzel McKinley-Lewis, but the drive stalls. Freshman punter Bailey Flint boots a 58-yard punt that’s downed on Ball State’s seven-yard line.
Ball State goes three-and-out. Toledo sophomore tight end Reggie Gilliam gets a hand on Ball State freshman Nathan Snyder’s punt. McKinley-Lewis scoops it up and returns it to the Cardinals’ 11-yard line.
The Rockets go three-and-out. Junior kicker Jameson Vest puts Toledo ahead 3-0 on a 32-yard field goal.
Ball State redshirt sophomore Zack Blair, the third-string quarterback, is sacked hard on the next drive and is helped off the field with what appears to be a leg injury. Redshirt freshman Drew Plitt takes over. A facemask penalty pushes Ball State over the 50-yard line, but the Cardinals have to punt. Snyder pins Toledo on its own 2-yard line.
The Rockets go three-and-out.
The Cardinals take over on Toledo’s 49-yard line. On second-and-2, sophomore running back Malik Dunner breaks through the middle of the line for a 41-yard touchdown, Ball State’s first touchdown since Sept. 23. The Cardinals lead 7-3.
Toledo’s next drive stalls at the 50-yard line as time expires in the first quarter.
Second quarter
Ball State takes over on its own 20-yard line after Flint’s punt bounces into the end zone. On second-and-4 from the 26, freshman receiver Justin Hall gains 22 yards on a reverse. The drive stalls and the Cardinals punt.
Toledo starts on its own 17-yard line. After gaining a first down, senior running back Terry Swanson scores on a 71-yard touchdown run to put the Rockets ahead 10-7.
The Cardinals go three-and-out, and this time Snyder’s punt only goes 14 yards.
Toledo starts on Ball State’s 48-yard line and takes advantage of the short field. Senior quarterback Logan Woodside connects with sophomore receiver Desmond Phillips for a 35-yard touchdown pass to increase the lead to 17-7.
Ball State gets a couple of first downs, but the drive fizzles before crossing the 50.
The Rockets take over on their own 30-yard line. On third-and-7 from the 33, Woodside hits sophomore Diontae Johnson for a 67-yard touchdown pass down the left sideline. Toledo leads 24-7.
The Cardinals move into Rockets territory on the next drive as they run the two-minute drill. Junior Morgan Hagee kicks a 43-yard field goal as time expires to cut Toledo's lead to 24-10 going into halftime.
Third quarter
Ball State receives to begin the second half but goes three-and-out.
On first-and-10 from Toledo’s 12-yard line, Woodside throws to Johnson deep over the middle near midfield. Johnson jumps and tips the pass to himself before running into the end zone for an 88-yard touchdown. The Rockets lead 30-10.
Ball State goes three-and-out, and this time Toledo doesn’t even need an offensive play to score. Johnson muffed Snyder’s 54-yard punt at the 13-yard line, but scoops it up and returns it for an 87-yard touchdown to increase the lead to 37-10.
After another Cardinals three-and-out, the Rockets move into the red zone on a 37-yard pass from Woodside to McKinley-Lewis. Toledo takes a 44-10 lead after a one-yard touchdown run by redshirt freshman Shakif Seymour.
Ball State’s run game takes the Cardinals across the 50, but the drive stalls on the 37-yard line when Plitt’s pass to Hall on fourth-and-7 falls incomplete.
Toledo extends its lead with another big play on first-and-10 when Seymour scores a 63-yard touchdown to make it 51-10.
Ball State punts on its next drive, but McKinley-Lewis muffs it. Cardinals junior defensive back Marc Walton recovers the ball on the seven-yard line. Plitt scores his first collegiate touchdown when he scrambles for five yards on fourth-and-goal to make it 51-17.
Toledo redshirt freshman running back Nevone McCrimmon appears to score a 75-yard touchdown on the Rockets next play from scrimmage but a review rules him out of bounds at the two-yard line. The referee puts one second back on the clock, then winds the clock to end the third quarter.
Fourth quarter
Toledo’s backup quarterback, senior Michael Julian, scores a two-yard touchdown on a read-option run to make it 58-17.
Ball State’s offense crosses the 50 again, but the drive stalls at Toledo’s 49-yard line. Hagee comes in to punt and pins the Rockets at their own 8-yard line.
The Rockets are finally forced to punt for the first time since the second quarter on their next drive. Neither team scores for the rest of the game, as Toledo wins 58-17.
